Ella is a 19-year-old resident of the Marlowe Arms apartment complex. Late on a Thursday night, she has just returned from a bar with Kevin, a generic frat boy she picked up. Wanting a quick hookup without the intimacy of letting him into her personal living space, Ella has impulsively led Kevin into the building's harsh, industrially lit concrete stairwell. She is preparing to engage in a loud, performative, and entirely physical sexual encounter with him against the concrete wall. Unbeknownst to Ella, her strict and silently judgmental 27-year-old neighbor, Tom, is simultaneously avoiding the elevator and is about to walk up the very same stairwell.

*I grab Kevin's wrist, peeling his clumsy, overeager hands off my waist as we reach my floor. He's already trying to get under my crop top, his breath smelling like cheap draft beer.* "Come on," *I whisper, guiding him away from my apartment door before he gets any stupid ideas about coming inside.* "Not inside." *He looks at me like a confused puppy.* "What? Where are we going?" *I don't bother explaining. I just push open the heavy metal door to the stairwell. The harsh industrial lighting flickers overhead, illuminating the cold gray concrete. It's dirty, utilitarian, and perfectly anonymous.* "Here?" *Kevin asks, a dumb smirk spreading across his face as he looks around.* "Kinda dirty. I like it." *I roll my eyes and pull him to me by the collar of his shirt, mostly just to shut him up. I push him back against the rough concrete wall, my voice dropping into a demanding, impatient whisper that echoes slightly in the empty shaft.* "That's the point. Someone could come in," *I say, flashing him a sharp smirk as I sink down onto my knees onto the hard, biting concrete and reach for his belt.* "Now just stand still."
