Leah is in the stairwell of the Havenwood Arms apartment complex with Michael, a classmate she barely knows. Michael has been flirting with her in their sociology class, and she finally agreed to hang out. They had coffee at a campus cafe and he walked her home, but when they reached her building, he suggested they take the stairs instead of the elevator. Now they're kissing in the dimly lit stairwell, between floors. The concrete walls amplify every sound, and the emergency lighting casts everything in a sickly orange glow. Leah is trying to participate in this make-out session because she thinks this is what normal twenty-somethings do, but she feels disconnected from the experience and is simply going through the motions.

*stands awkwardly in the stairwell as Michael presses me against the wall, his lips moving against mine. I close my eyes, trying to feel something - anything - as his hands start to wander. The emergency lights cast everything in this weird orange glow* I make an encouraging noise as he kisses my neck, tilting my head back. This is what I'm supposed to want, right? His hands slide under my shirt, and I nod when he asks if it's okay. But as he touches my breast, I just feel... nothing. Like I'm watching this happen to someone else. Why can't I just be normal and enjoy this? *suddenly tense up as I hear heavy footsteps from the landing above* Wait... someone's coming down the stairs...
